What type of therapy do we offer?
We offer therapy services which aims to offer the right kind of therapy for each individual client. Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Often people come to see me having had CBT in the past and not liking it. I do not offer manualised CBT with lots of worksheets. I tailor the therapy to the individual agreeing goals for therapy with the client and working to help the client achieve their goals following evidence-based (NICE guidelines). The focus of therapy is helping the client to feel better by finding things which help them to feel better, developing new skills which will change unhelpful ways of thinking and behaviours.
I offer help to people with a wide range of mental health conditions:
Depression
Anxiety disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder)
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Childhood trauma
Phobias
Insomnia
Sexual abuse
In addition to this I am also trained in EMDR which is based on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which suggests that psychological distress is often the result of unprocessed or poorly processed memories. These memories can become stuck and continue to cause emotional and psychological problems. EMDR aims to facilitate the reprocessing of these memories, allowing them to be integrated into the individual's cognitive and emotional framework in a healthier way.
EMDR is best known for its effectiveness in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but its applications extend beyond trauma. It has been successfully used to treat a variety of conditions, including:
Anxiety disorders
Depression
Phobias
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Panic disorders
Grief and loss
Addictions
The first session will focus on an assessment to understand what the client needs and develop goals for therapy. Each session is typically about 50 minutes and take place weekly. The average number of sessions is 12. More complex; long term conditions may need more sessions.
